The town in which I grew up, Gaithersburg, Maryland, apparently figures prominently on a list of the top ten best places to raise a family in the U.S. today. The list constitutes a book, Best Places to Raise Your Family: The Top 100 Affordable Communities in the U.S. by Bert Sperling and Peter Sander. I have no idea what criteria they used, but it's a bit edifying. It also makes me a little jittery. Gaithersburg, idyllic though it was–and is–had its own seedy underbelly. My god…what must the rest of the nation be like? Tip-off is here.
